My mother became a teacher, rode her pony about 20 miles every Sunday pm to teach classes for 5 days, then rode home Friday night to the home farm , had to help garden, pick blackberries, etc.
I believe she was about twenty when she and her sister Florence were picking berries and a black bear charged!!
She shot the bear in the face with her 12 ga shotgun, scooped up the berry buckets and tried to catch up up with Florence, who had 100 yard lead!!
it's been a family story since about 1916!! -
my uncles, her brothers, just said “Maggie took care of her own, including us!!"
I love my forebearers independence !!
Do you ???

When I found the 1940 US Census for Maytown with my Grandparents, it was fun to
find that my Grandmother was the Census taker for the area.
